Teaching and research interests

First and foremost I am a medievalist, specialised in the history of the hospital from the 13^th to the 15-16^th century. I obtained my PhD at the University of Paris IV with a thesis on Patients in hospitals in the North of France at the end of the Middle Ages (ca. 1200 to ca. 1500). My favourite research topics are the study of food, pathologies and treatment, social categories in difficulty and hospitalised – or at least helped and assisted – (children, the elderly, pregnant women, handicapped …), as well as the nursing and social assistance professions within the framework of hospital and religious structures.

A second topic also draws my attention: voyages and contacts between peoples. My arrival as professor of Medieval History at the UAG in September 1999, and considerations of the accessibility of source material, as well as an interest in the local history, have motivated me to expand my studies to the essential focus of interest of the geographical environment of the Caribbean which are the modern and contemporary periods. Thus I have become interested in the first contacts between Europeans and Caribbeans during the first stages of the colonialisation of the Antilles.

However, I still continue my personal research work on the hospital in the medieval world. Participation in various international conferences in Europe or in the Caribbean allow me to keep in touch with many fellow researchers from outside the UAG.
